Photoluminescence, UPDATED CODES
December 10, 2008
James P. Colgate, Exec Architect, New York City, Department of Buildings and Thomas Jensen, City of New York Fire Dept. presented the proposed addition of Photoluminescent Exit path Markings to Section 1027 and it was approved by near unanimous vote for inclusion into the 2009 edition of the IBC.  The IBC adopted a standard for 1” PL markings on Handrails, Stair Tread and Landings, Demarcation lines, Exit Door Signage and Obstruction markings within the  enclosure emergency exit path for all NEW and EXISTING buildings 75ft (7 stories) or taller.

Photoluminescence, The Basics

The International Code Council (ICC) has adopted new building code requirements adding Photoluminescent Exit Path Markings into the 2009 International Building Code (IBC). Also the NFPA 101 and 5000 code has added Photoluminescent Exit Path Markings requirements effective January 1, 2009.

Jim Armour, President and CEO of Balco Inc., has been elected PSA Vice President and Board Member

We are pleased to inform you that Jim Armour, President and CEO of Balco Inc., has been elected Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the Photoluminescent Safety Association. The PSA is dedicated to generating broad-based acceptance of safety-grade photoluminescent products. PSA is an advocate for PL products before code-setting organizations such as the International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The PSA Code and Standards Committee works to educate the ICC and NFPA committee members on the advantage of including PL products in their building codes for safer evacuation of occupants in case of emergencies. Jim has been an active associate of the PSA, working on the Code and Public relations committees. With his new responsibilities, Jim will now chair the Code Development subcommittee for the PSA. Balco Inc. is a charter member of the PSA and has given numerous educational seminars to the architectural, building and fire code departs of several major cities and states promoting the Life Safety benefits of Photoluminescent technology in our building industry. Balco is also an active sponsor of the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education program and sponsors accredited seminars throughout the USA on Photoluminescent technology and its application in the building industry.
